Step by step
Download Kdenlive
Go to kdenlive.org and download the version for your system (Windows, macOS or Linux). It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Set up the project
In Project › Project Settings choose your video’s resolution and frame rate (for example, 1080p at 30 fps). If you shoot vertically for social media, pick a vertical profile.
Import your clips
Drag videos, photos and music into the project bin. If your computer is struggling or you shoot in 4K, turn on proxy clips in the project settings: you edit lightweight copies and the export uses the originals.
Edit on the timeline
Drag clips onto the tracks, cut them with the razor tool and rearrange the pieces. Use the audio tracks for music and voice.
Add titles, transitions and effects
Create a title clip for text, drag effects from the Effects panel and add transitions between clips. With keyframes you can animate position, size or opacity.
Generate automatic subtitles
Use speech recognition in the subtitle tool. The first time, Kdenlive will ask you to download a speech model; after that it runs on your computer without sending the audio anywhere.
Export the video
Click Render, choose an MP4 (H.264) profile for YouTube and social media, and pick the destination folder. The video comes out with no watermark.
Files and formats
Kdenlive opens most video, audio and image formats: MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, WAV, PNG or JPG, among others. It exports to MP4 (H.264 or H.265), WebM, MOV, GIF and more. Filmora projects can’t be opened: keep your original clips and rebuild any projects you want to keep editing.
What you won’t find
- There is no store of effects, templates or music like Filmora’s.
- Filmora’s generative AI features are missing.
- Some tools, such as animating with keyframes, take a little practice at first.
Tips
- Turn on proxy clips if playback stutters: editing becomes smooth even on laptops.
- Save often; Kdenlive also makes automatic backups of your project.
- For social media, pick a vertical profile before you start instead of cropping at the end.
- Find royalty-free music in the YouTube Studio audio library or on Free Music Archive.
Frequently asked questions
Does Kdenlive add a watermark?
No. Kdenlive is free and open source: it exports with no watermark, no length limit and no account needed.
Can I open my Filmora projects?
No. Filmora projects only open in Filmora. The practical approach is to finish any pending work there and start new projects in Kdenlive with your original clips.
Does Kdenlive run on an ordinary computer?
Yes. With proxy clips you can smoothly edit even 4K footage on modest machines; only the final export takes longer.
